Frequently Asked Questions — Robert C Chelin DPM FAAFAS
Do you offer direct billing to insurance companies?
Many extended health insurance plans in Ontario cover podiatry and custom orthotics. Our Whitby office is happy to provide detailed receipts for reimbursement, and we can discuss direct billing options and coverage details when you book. We recommend confirming your specific plan's podiatry and orthotic benefits with your insurer in advance.
Do I need a doctor's referral to book an appointment?
No referral is required to see our podiatrist or chiropodist in Ontario—you can book directly with our Whitby clinic. That said, some insurance plans may request a physician's referral for orthotics or other services to be reimbursed, so it's worth checking your individual policy beforehand.
What types of foot conditions and injuries do you treat?
We treat a wide range of foot and lower-limb conditions including sports-related injuries, heel and arch pain, plantar fasciitis, bunions, flatfeet and hyperpronation, diabetic and general foot care, and various common foot ailments. We also perform surgical procedures for pain relief, restoration of function, and correction of deformities.
What can I expect at my first appointment?
Your first visit includes a thorough assessment of your foot health, a discussion of your symptoms and goals, and a biomechanical or gait evaluation where appropriate. Based on the findings, our team will recommend a personalized treatment plan, which may include custom orthotics, shockwave therapy, or other options to reduce pain and improve function.
How do custom orthotics work and how are they made?
Custom orthotics are prescription shoe inserts designed to correct abnormal or irregular walking patterns and relieve strain on the feet. At our Whitby clinic, we assess your gait and foot structure, then create orthotics tailored to your specific needs to improve alignment, comfort, and mobility—supporting everything from everyday walking to athletic performance.
